Hearth Loft

The room

The Hearth Lofts are the lodge's favourite rooms for families with older children: a living floor with a real wood stove, and a sleeping loft up a fir staircase with two full-size bunks.

Downstairs you get a sitting room with a leather sofa, a wood stove we lay for you each afternoon, and a dining table for four. The king bedroom sits behind a sliding barn door, so the grown-ups can close off the noise. Upstairs, the loft has two bunks, a dormer window and a basket of card games that has been restocked for twenty years.

Wood for the stove is stacked by the door and replenished daily. If you have never lit one, ask at the desk: someone will come up and show you how in about four minutes, and there is a card on the mantel with the same instructions.

The courtyard below has the lodge firepit, which is lit at seven every evening. From the loft window, children get a decent view of the marshmallow situation.
